The Black Dress Archetype



This was a collaborative project between me an my classmate Yuxi Yin. We were asked to create a collection with the assigned archetype - The Black Dress. Through this archetype me and Yuxi
got to explore and compare our cultural relationships and differences to the same garment archetype. Popularized by Gabrielle Chanel and many other couturiers, the black dress has gained its unique place within the fashion industry as it has been adapted over the time to render distinctive interpretations of femininity. Particularly in traditional Chinese culture, one would always compare women with water: amorphous therefore quick to transform to any shape, soft yet bearing the ability to penetrate a stone. As much as a symbolic and iconic expression of womenhood is the black dress, this time we’d like to take this archetype out of the gender
